In 1972, Dale’s Shirt Wheel began in a studio apartment in Santa Clara. Dale was able to purchase thousands of men’s off-price shirts at greatly reduced prices.  On Sundays, over a two year period, he rolled racks of these shirts into large apartment complexes to sell to the community.  All shirts were $5 each.

That same year, Dale opened his first store at the corner of 10^th Street and Williams (2 blocks from the very first Togo’s) - most of his customers were San Jose State students.

In 1976, Dale had the good fortune of meeting Mel Solomon; Mel owned off-price women’s apparel stores with a similar business model as Dale’s Shirt Wheel. He was sure Dale would be successful in a shopping center where he was located.

On April 8, 1976, Dale’s Shirt Wheel opened its doors at Princeton Plaza.  Papa Doo Run Run performed and KLIV ran their radio show at the event to promote the opening.  Not only did Dale sell his $5 men’s button-ups, he introduced t-shirts, transfers, and personalized lettering.  He became a local pioneer in customizing apparel.

Dale’s motto has always been to do it right the first time. The Shirt Wheel has been, and continues to be, a community staple for providing the highest level of customer service and satisfaction.  Years later, the rest is history.
